How Universities Use Your NBT Score: Admission, Placement & Support
Admission decisions
Universities use your NBT results together with your National Senior Certificate (NSC) and other criteria to decide whether to offer you a place. The NBT gives them extra information about your academic literacy, quantitative literacy, and (if you wrote it) mathematical readiness. Strong NBT performance can support your application; weaker performance does not always mean rejection—it may influence which programme or level you are placed into.
Placement into programmes
Your benchmark category (Proficient, Intermediate, or Basic) helps institutions place you in the right programme. Proficient learners are typically admitted into mainstream degrees. Those in the Intermediate band may be offered places in supported mainstream or extended programmes. Those in the Basic band are often directed to foundation or extended programmes that build the skills needed for success in first year. Placement is about fit, not punishment.
Support and foundation courses
Universities use NBT data to design and target support: extra tutorials, augmented curricula, foundation modules, or extended degree structures. The goal is to close the gap between school and university so that more students complete their degrees. If you are placed in a foundation or supported programme, it is because the institution is investing in your readiness rather than setting you up to fail.
What you can do
Prepare as well as you can so that your NBT score reflects your true ability. On the day, bring the right items, follow the rules, and use the strategies you have practised. After the test, check each university's policy on how they use NBT results and whether they accept a rewrite. Your score is one input among several—but it is an important one for admission and placement.
If you are placed in a foundation or extended programme, see it as the institution investing in your success rather than as a rejection. Many students in these programmes go on to complete their degrees. The NBT helps universities match you to the right level of support from the start.
