Decoding NBT Benchmarks: Degrees vs. Diplomas

Different thresholds for different programmes

Did you know that the benchmark scores required to be considered "Proficient" differ depending on whether you are applying for a Degree or a Diploma?

For degree programmes

To be considered "Proficient" (ready for mainstream university study without extra support), you generally need a score of 71%+ for Academic Literacy, 70%+ for Quantitative Literacy, and 69%+ for Mathematics.

For diploma / higher certificate programmes

The proficiency thresholds are slightly lower. You need 63%+ for Academic Literacy, 64%+ for Quantitative Literacy, and 62%+ for Mathematics to reach the Proficient band.

Intermediate and Basic are not rejection

Remember, scoring in the "Intermediate" or "Basic" bands does not necessarily mean you are rejected; universities use these bands to place you into extended or foundation programmes to ensure you get the academic support you need.

Exact percentage cut-offs can vary slightly by institution and year. Always check the NBT website and your chosen university's admissions pages for the most up-to-date requirements. Whether you are aiming for a degree or a diploma, your NBT result is used to place you where you are most likely to succeed.
