NBT Online vs In-Person: Which Should I Choose?

You have two options

The NBT can be written at various physical venues (e.g. universities and schools) across the country, or online via a secure, proctored session. Both count the same; universities do not distinguish between the two. Your choice depends on access, reliability of your setup, and personal preference.

Writing online: what you need

  • A stable internet connection that can last for the full 3-hour session (and longer if you write both AQL and MAT).
  • A quiet, suitable space and a device that meets the NBT online requirements (check www.nbt.ac.za for current specs).
  • Awareness that loadshedding, connectivity drops, or computer issues can interrupt or invalidate your session.

Book earlier if you choose online

Writers are strongly advised to book an earlier test date when writing online. If you are affected by loadshedding, loss of connectivity, or technical problems, you will need time to rebook and sit again before university deadlines. Booking early gives you that buffer; leaving it until the last minute does not.

In-person: the advantages

At a physical venue you don't depend on your own internet or power. The session is supervised in a controlled environment, and technical issues are the responsibility of the venue. If you have unreliable connectivity or prefer a formal exam setting, in-person is often the safer choice. You still need to arrive by 7:30 AM and bring ID, pencils, eraser, water, and lunch.

There is no "better" or "worse" option in the eyes of universities—both formats are treated the same. Your choice should be based on your own circumstances: reliability of your setup, peace of mind, and whether you perform better in a formal venue or at home. When in doubt, in-person removes the risk of technical failure on the day.
