When Should I Write the NBT? Deadlines, Timing & Why Waiting Won't Help
Why waiting won't give you an advantage
Many learners want to delay writing the NBTs until just before their final NSC exams, believing they will know more of the curriculum. NBT research shows there is no advantage to waiting until late in the year. The tests are specifically designed to exclude Grade 12 topics that are typically only taught in the final weeks of the school year. Writing earlier does not put you at a disadvantage—and it can reduce stress and give you time to rewrite if needed.
University deadlines matter most
You should write the NBTs when you feel ready, but you must meet your specific university application deadlines. Results are typically available about three weeks after you write. Count back from your earliest deadline and book your test at least four weeks before that date so your results are released in time.
Medicine and Health Science: write by July
If you are applying for Medicine, Health Science, or other programmes with early selection, many universities require NBT scores by early July. Plan to write your NBT before or during the June/July window so your results reach the institution in time. Check each university's admissions page for the exact date they need your NBT scores.
Writing online? Book earlier
If you choose to write the NBTs online, you need a stable internet connection. Loadshedding, connectivity issues, or computer problems can disrupt your session. Writers are strongly advised to book an earlier test date when writing online, so that if you are affected by technical issues, you still have time to book an alternative test date before university deadlines close.
In short: write when you are ready, but always work back from your earliest university deadline. Give yourself at least four weeks before that date so your results are released in time. For Medicine and Health Science, plan for June or earlier; for everyone else, check each institution's requirements and book accordingly.
